The Veterina Golob wildlife refuge in Muta takes in injured and sick protected wild animals – birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals – and provides veterinary care. Some game species are referred to the local hunting association.

Horjul Shelter in Smrečje is a private institute caring for abandoned animals from over twenty contracted municipalities from Gorenjska to the Karst. Its website presents dogs, cats and other animals for adoption, offers remote adoption and invites volunteers and donors. Office hours are weekday mornings; adoptions by prior arrangement.
Johanca Shelter is run by the Tolmin veterinary practice and cares for abandoned dogs and cats from Tolmin and Kobarid. Found, missing and adoptable animals are listed on the practice's website, which also houses a clinic, a cat and small-animal hotel and a grooming salon. Visits weekday mornings.

Ljubljana Animal Shelter at Gmajnice is one of Slovenia's largest shelters, run by the public institute Ljubljana Zoo. It takes in abandoned, lost and surrendered dogs and cats from Ljubljana and over ten contracted municipalities. The website lists all animals for adoption, the adoption procedure, found and missing animals and care advice; visits daily 2–4 pm by appointment.

Mačja hiša ("Cat House") in Celje is an institute for cat care and awareness running a registered cat shelter and an extensive adoption programme, with over 170 animals waiting for homes. Besides adoptions (also remote) and sponsorship it focuses on education, sterilisation campaigns and the Vita project. Office hours weekday mornings.

Mačji dol ("Cat Valley") is a registered cat shelter in Puštal, Škofja Loka, run by the Žverca animal-aid society. It cares for abandoned and found cats from Škofja Loka, Železniki and Gorenja vas-Poljane, with a focus on feral cats and sterilisation. Cats for adoption, the adoption process and volunteering are online; visits weekday afternoons.
Mala hiša ("Little House") shelter in Lukačevci near Moravske Toplice cares for abandoned and lost small animals from the whole Pomurje region under contracts with 25 municipalities. Dogs and cats for adoption and found dogs are listed online; open weekday mornings and Saturdays.
Meli Shelter in Repče near Trebnje is part of Meli Center Repče, one of Slovenia's first dog hotels, with a shop and dog-training services. The shelter serves around 25 contracted municipalities in Dolenjska, Bela krajina and central Slovenia; animals for adoption are shown online. Open weekdays and Saturday mornings.
Oskar Shelter and Pet Hotel in Vitovlje near Šempas cares for abandoned dogs and cats from thirteen municipalities of the Goriška and Karst regions and also boards dogs. The bilingual website presents animals for adoption, the adoption process and lost-and-found guidance; dog walking on Saturday mornings.
