About the breed

A breed of its own, not a long-haired Russian Blue

Although the Nebelung is often informally described as a long-haired version of the Russian Blue, it is a breed in its own right with its own standard. The Nebelung comes from a separate breeding programme started in Denver, USA, in the 1980s; TICA accepted it as a new breed in 1987, and it gained full championship status in 1997. Its standard does follow the Russian Blue in body type and colour, except that the Nebelung's coat is semi-long instead of short. The characteristic blue-grey coat with silver-tipped guard hairs and green eyes is nearly identical between the two breeds, which makes sense given how closely related their development lines are.

A rare breed that is hard to find

The Nebelung is considered one of the rarer cat breeds in the world, because its founding gene pool was small from the start and the breed has spread slowly through a limited number of dedicated breeders. In many countries, including ours, breeders are not consistently available, and waiting times for a kitten can be long, which is worth factoring into any plan to get one.

A cautious nature, not shyness

The Nebelung is careful and thoughtful by nature, so it takes longer to trust new people and changes in its surroundings than many other breeds. This is not a sign of aggression but a reserved temperament that settles down over time with patient, calm handling, and with its own family the Nebelung is an affectionate, devoted companion. Because of this trait it does better in a stable, predictable household than in a noisy home with frequent visits and unexpected guests.

A quiet voice, a calm presence

The Nebelung rarely vocalises, and when it does its voice is soft and quiet, in contrast to more talkative cat breeds. This calmness matches its overall temperament — it is a cat that prefers to watch what is going on from a safe distance and then gradually approaches once it is satisfied the environment is safe.

Longevity inherited from the Russian Blue

The Nebelung is considered one of the longer-lived cat breeds, with a lifespan that often reaches 15 to 18 years, and some sources report individual cats living even longer. This owes something to the breed's genetic diversity, which comes without pronounced hereditary conditions, and to the generally robust health inherited from the Russian Blue. Longevity naturally also depends on diet, body weight and regular veterinary checkups throughout the cat's life.

Caring for the semi-long coat

The Nebelung's semi-long coat is denser than that of shorthaired breeds but lacks the kind of undercoat that mats quickly, so brushing once or twice a week is enough to remove loose hair and prevent tangles. More frequent brushing makes sense during the spring and autumn shedding seasons, but otherwise the coat does not demand much time. The kind of dedicated ruff or tail care that some more lavishly coated breeds need is not usually necessary for a Nebelung.

A home with young children? Think it through

The Nebelung is not an ideal choice for a home with young children, since its shy, cautious nature means it does better in a calmer household with composed or older children who know how to respect its space. In a noisy home with the sudden, unpredictable movements typical of young children it can feel threatened and withdraw or become fearful, while it tends to bond well over time with older children who respect a cat's boundaries.

Who a Nebelung suits

The Nebelung suits guardians who value a calm, affectionate cat and are willing to build trust gradually rather than expect instant openness toward new people. Thanks to its low-maintenance coat and generally good health it is accessible to less experienced owners too, provided they can offer the household a calm, stable environment without too many changing visitors.
