How to choose a responsible breeder

  1. Visit the litter. See the puppies or kittens at the breeder's, with their mother, where they are raised. A breeder who only offers delivery or a car-park handover is not a good choice.
  2. Ask for the paperwork. A pedigree (FCI, or FIFe/WCF for cats), a pet passport with vaccinations and microchip, and a sales contract. A puppy must not leave before 8 weeks of age.
  3. Ask about the parents' health tests. For breeds with known hereditary conditions (hips, eyes, heart, genetic tests) the breeder should show the parents' results, not just assurances.
  4. Check the breeding conditions. How many litters a year, how many breeds, how the animals are socialised. A responsible breeder has few litters and many questions for you.
  5. Watch for warning signs. Always "in stock", several breeds at once, pressure to pay quickly, no contract or no visit allowed.
