How to choose a responsible breeder
- Visit the litter. See the puppies or kittens at the breeder's, with their mother, where they are raised. A breeder who only offers delivery or a car-park handover is not a good choice.
- Ask for the paperwork. A pedigree (FCI, or FIFe/WCF for cats), a pet passport with vaccinations and microchip, and a sales contract. A puppy must not leave before 8 weeks of age.
- Ask about the parents' health tests. For breeds with known hereditary conditions (hips, eyes, heart, genetic tests) the breeder should show the parents' results, not just assurances.
- Check the breeding conditions. How many litters a year, how many breeds, how the animals are socialised. A responsible breeder has few litters and many questions for you.
- Watch for warning signs. Always "in stock", several breeds at once, pressure to pay quickly, no contract or no visit allowed.
- Consider adoption too. Shelters and rescues also have purebred animals waiting; the shelter directory is on Živalce.si.
